2010 Blazer Stakes Field, Barriers & Betting Tips

October 1st, 2010

This Sunday Flemington Racecourse will come alive with their Melbourne Cup Preview Day featuring a super line-up of Group races including the $200,000 Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m).

A capacity field of 16 mares plus four emergencies make up the 2010 Blazer Stakes, formerly the Kingston Town Stakes, final field including current favourite No Evidence Needed.

Drawn ideally on the rails, the John Thompson-trained Let’s Elope Stakes winning mare No Evidence Needed is installed as the $5.50 favourite to win on Sunday through Sportsbet.

Local Flemington-based trainer Thompson will also be represented by Small Minds and Happy Hippy, poor barrier draws for the pair leading them to be at longer odds of $26 and $21 respectively.

In an open betting market the punters are getting behind a number of other top mares to win the Blazer Stakes including Palacio De Cristal, Lady Lynette and Irish Lights.

Grahame Begg’s Encosta De Lago mare Palacio De Cristal is tipped to run well first-up on Sunday, the five-year-old resuming racing after a five month spell and coming off a promising barrier trial win at Randwick.

Palacio De Cristal is drawn midfield in barrier 10 and is at a quote of $6 through Sportsbet.

Lady Lynette has fared better with an ideal barrier three draw.

Following closely in the odds at $6.50, the six-year-old has come close to Group glory a number of times this season finishing third in the Cockram Stakes, fourth in the Let’s Elope and then third last start in the Stocks Stakes.

David Hayes’ Fastnet Rock four-year-old Irish Lights is the only other runner at single figure odds paying $9 after a good barrier four draw, but looks best for a Place bet.

For more value the best longer priced entry that could cause an upset and has the skill to win on Sunday is Cockram Stakes winner Rhythm In Paris, looking to improve after a horror run in the Let’s Elope Stakes.

Fourth emergency Live In Sin is also at the top of the odds despite not being guaranteed of a start, paying $6, as is Anthony Cumming’s third emergency Sister Madly at $10.

The marquee race at Flemington on Sunday is the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) where Shoot Out is the favourite

Other features providing great betting markets include the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) lead by Divorces and the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) where star sprinter is the hot favourite.

The 2010 Blazer Stakes will take place as Race 5 at Flemington on Sunday and is due to jump at 2:20pm.
