2010 Blazer Stakes Won by Palacio De Cristal Ahead of No Evidence Needed

October 4th, 2010

Punters that backed the favourites in the 2010 Blazer Stakes on Sunday were rewarded as the two mares topping the odds ran the quinella when Palacio De Cristal and No Evidence Needed finished one-two.

Equal $5 favourite Palacio De Cristal, trained by Grahame Begg, took the early lead with jockey Dwayne Dunn aboard and courageously fought on to lead all the way and beat home John Thompson’s No Evidence Needed ($5) by a head in the $200,000 Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m).

Increasing the Blazer Stakes Trifecta payout was the roughie who placed third, Gerald Ryan’s Strawberry Field ($12) who was two lengths back from the winner.

Five-year-old Encosta De Lago mare Palacio De Cristal has now won five of her 22 career starts for $430,700 in prize money and will next run in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) on October 16 at Caulfield Cup Day.

Following the Tristarc, Begg has the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) on the opening Melbourne Cup Carnival meeting – Victoria Derby Day – on the agenda for Palacio De Cristal and if she backs up well from that could also stay around to contest the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) five days later.

The headline race at Flemington on Sunday was the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) where the Lloyd Williams-owned Zipping claimed an upset win over Shocking and Shoot Out.

Other feature events at the meeting included the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) won by Sistine Angel, and the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) where super sprinter Hay List scored its third spring win on the trot.
